- ColorSync: Compatibility Issues
-
- Article Created: 6 January 1993
-
-
- TOPIC -----------------------------------------------------------
-
- This article gives some compatibility information about ColorSync.
-
-
- DISCUSSION ------------------------------------------------------
-
- System Software
- ---------------
- ColorSync is compatible with system software version 7.0 and later.
-
- Application Software
- --------------------
- Most applications will print using ColorSync, assuming that the driver
- takes advantage of ColorSync. Those applications that generate custom
- PostScript will have to be revised. To take advantage of some of the new
- features of ColorSync (that is, view the matched image on the display,
- preview, or do gamut matching) will require revisions to applications.
- Apple has worked with software developers to ensure adoption of
- ColorSync as quickly as possible.
-
- Photo CD
- -------
- ColorSync works with Photo CD, but not directly. Photo CD files are based on
- a proprietary color space called YCC. Apple wrote a QuickTime extension
- that converts these to RGB. Once these images are converted, ColorSync
- performs the necessary matching. The process is automatic and invisible to
- the user.
-
- QuickDraw
- ---------
- QuickDraw GX incorporates the ColorSync technology directly, which means
- that developer and customer investments in ColorSync are preserved with
- QuickDraw GX. Because QuickDraw GX incorporates a totally new graphics
- model, the color spaces supported by GX exceed the ColorSync implementation
- under today's QuickDraw. Many of these color spaces are device-
- independent, and are in addition to the RGB and CIE XYZ spaces that
- ColorSync supports.
